Loan loans — why are they (perhaps) riding high on the wave?

Lecture by Irene Simonsen, Associate Professor at the Department of Design, Media and Educational Sciences, University of Southern Denmark.
When, at the Paris Olympics last year, table tennis player Anders Lind wiped floor with his opponent, it was something that attracted attention -- perhaps most of all the performance and not so much this reversal, wiping floor with someone. To wipe the floor with someone, they say, out there, and then suddenly it's in Politiken. Why do we start using such a phrase when we already have the term to sweep someone off the track?
Based on a trawl through the press and a survey, we delve into two handfuls of recent phrase loans: when have they crept into the language? How have they evolved over time? And above all, what is it that might make them gain traction in the language?
