Poems that quiver. Verses that kill.
Gyldensteensvej 2, 5400 Bogense
Danish
Lecture by Peter Juel Henrichsen, Senior Researcher at the Danish Language Board.
The first newspapers were on verse. It seemed that a journalist who was just spouting facts was a leafleteer, not an authority. The theater was on verse, the literature, children's books, textbooks. The songs of the street, the party, the association, the church, the army. The King's Song and the High Song. Yes, that was back then.
Or was it? Most words a typical Dane hears on an ordinary day are still in verse. Pop verses on the radio, happyvers in the supermarket, sad verses in the movie, rap on youtube. The verse still wades right into us, the gentle, the nervous, the wicked. Let's spend an hour investigating why.
