Language and art — did they arise at the same time? A Scratch of Human Prehistory
Gyldensteensvej 2, 5400 Bogense
Danish
Lecture with Jacob Vamberg, dr.phil. in Art History.
To people today, it seems obvious that language is of a symbolic nature -- i.e., its sounds refer to something imagined, often something that is not present at all. But could it be thought that this abstract referential function is a late superstructure on a long prehistory in which language first seemed like a kind of music, i.e., where properties such as rhythm, strength, pitch and gesture were the determining factors?
In that case, the language is presumably developed in close chronological context with the image, which has a long demonstrable prehistory of a non-figurative nature and first becomes mimetic in cave paintings and sculptures about 50,000 years ago.
The lecture is free, but a seat/ticket must be booked.
